This winter got me into a few marriages, couldn't really attend all of those but the talk of these marriages haven't sufficed even after days. The main show-stopper seems to be the food(obviously! I only eat as much as i breathe) and the 'gifts' that were exchanged. There's this Indian tradition we all know about..where the bride's family showers gifts on the groom. I dint hear anything about gifts given to the bride so 'exchanged' would definitely be a wrong word.
Giving dowry is punishable by law according to The Dowry Prohibition Act,1961. so the simplest thing it seemed to do was change what it was called and term it "gifts in blessings".I have heard of weddings where the bride's family gifts everything from a king-sized bed to even spoons to the groom! You could put four walls around and there..a well equipped house! But that's not the painful thing, what slaps you in the face is the bride or her family saying,"Humko karna hi padta hain" or "Aise hi hota hain". Fools!Someone before you agreed to do it,you are following them and someone else will too. If you wanted to change it,you should, rather than playing along. I don't understand how the grooms family shamelessly demands and accepts all those gifts too, Is your lad in such a state that he cannot buy those himself? Then where do you get the courage to get him married. What it looks to me is a girls parents gifting as much as they can so she slaves for someone else for the rest of her life. Painful, that she was such a burden to them.
Every time the groom and his party visit, they are fed enough to turn into 'Hodor' or 'Hagrid' instantly. Also what irritates is the bride being told to address her man as "Aap". If i'd be told this,i would sink in a state of terror wondering if hes as old as my father(That happens in India too!) or maybe I'd keep questioning as to what has he done to deserve that one-sided respect. India's marriage concept never really agrees with me. I remember telling my friend."Yaar how do they do it? Deciding who you are going to spend the rest of your life with (or saat janam,if you are too dramatic),in a single day or that kind of time. Any donkey would pretend to be a gentleman because that's what everyone would want.! Still need to figure that out. All i know is..my parents are going to have a hard time getting me out of their door.
